KEEPING IN TOUCH
I never knew birds could smile,
but outside my window perched
on a branch was a smiling cardinal
as vividly bright red as a bird can be.
It smiled directly at me and I smiled
right back certain it was a greeting
from my deceased wife. Suddenly,
a gust of wind blows open my front door
as I inhale the scent of my wife’s perfume
that must have been worn on a young
Korean neighbor passing by.
Falling into a deep sleep, I see my wife
asking me if I miss being touched by her
as much as she misses being touched by me?
I immediately explain: The number of how much
I miss your touch is so far beyond infinity,
it has not yet been invented.
I awaken with a smile on my face.
